The e-AWB is applicable to all international shipments except those shipments to or from the United States and Brazil or certain stations in China. Due to government and Customs regulations, shipments destined for Brazil and/or certain stations in China continue to require signed copies of the paper master air waybill (MAWB) at this time.

With e-AWB, your shipping process is easier with less paper.

The e-AWB (electronic air waybill) is an exchanged electronic message that creates an enforceable cargo shipping agreement between a freight forwarder, logistics company, or other shipping customer and United. Use of the e-AWB eliminates the need to print, handle, and archive paper air waybills. Shipment-specific data contained on the front of the paper air waybill is replaced by electronic messages that the customer sends to United. When any master air waybill (MAWB) or any house air waybill (HAWB) data are sent via standard e-AWB messages, origin agents need only to verify piece count and weight to accept the shipment.

What is e-AWB?

With the e-AWB, United is helping customers move to a completely paperless shipping process. By shipping with an e-AWB, you can reduce costs, speed processing time and improve productivity. Environmentally-friendly e-AWBs also reduce your carbon footprint and remove the risk of your MAWB ever getting misplaced during shipment.

Why e-AWB?

The U.S. Domestic Conditions of Contract set forth on the back of the paper air waybill will continue to apply to each shipment on United within the United States, and the International Conditions of Contract may continue to apply to shipments on United to or from the United States. Both Conditions of Contract are available on UnitedCargo.com. In addition, customers are required to sign and activate participation in the IATA Multilateral e-AWB Agreement (or sign a bilateral agreement directly with United) to use e-AWBs to ship cargo on United.

Agreements for e-AWB

The e-AWB process is a stepping stone for when United moves to paperless shipping. United still requires the paper air waybill at tender of your shipment at this time, but accepts the EAP/EAW codes within the freight waybill (FWB).Please note all e-AWB shipments should include either EAW or EAP within the booking and FWB message:<ul>
 <li>EAW = e-AWB shipment without accompanying documents AND without pouch</li>
 <li>EAP = e-AWB shipment with accompanying documents OR with pouch</li>
</ul>The registration process required for e-AWB activation is to ensure electronic communication is established and works successfully. Not all stations have the capability of shipping without the paper air waybill and United still requires a paper air waybill until all stations are equipped to handle paperless shipping.

The e-AWB process

There are still limitations with going paperless. For example, dangerous goods (DG) or hazardous material shipments are required to be accompanied by the appropriate paper documentation – a DG declaration is an IATA standard and must be submitted by the customer. Therefore, United cannot accept an e-AWB for DG shipments. United continues to require printed copies of the paper air waybill and any other necessary documentation from our customers.

Things to know

<ul>
 <li>Typically, United requires customers to have at CCS/VAN (Cargo Community System/Value Added Network) like TRAXON, Descartes or CHAMP. The CCS/VAN assigns a PIMA code to their customers. The PIMA code is a way for the message provider to identity the e-AWB.</li>
 <li>The customer will need to notify their message provider to contact United and register for EDI messaging.</li>
 <li>If the customer doesn’t have a PIMA code and has their own SITA and would like to messages directly with United, we may be able to accommodate you. United will need the SITA to configure in our system.</li>
 <li>If none of the options above apply (you do not have own SITA message address and not signed up with a CCS/VAN) then you can contact IATA directly. IATA has a link where you could sign up and send freight waybill (FWB) data to all airlines, including United.</li>
</ul>

Electronic messaging

There are fees associated with manually adding e-AWB data into United’s systems. Here are the fees associated with e-AWBs:<ul>
 <li>If United sees the “CG” associated with the e-AWB, it is USD$2.50 per HAWB transmitted internationally. There is a USD$10 fee if you select e-AWB but fail to electronically send messaging to United.</li>
 <li>Non-transmission fees: These are not based on specific airport origin or destination, but rather on whether the shipment is international or domestic. Domestic e-AWBs will not be charged a fee (for freight waybill shipments).</li>
</ul>

 <li>The IATA Multilateral e-AWB Agreement must be signed and activated between the customer and IATA by country.</li>
 <li>IATA/CASS# must be provided to United on all stations that you would like e-AWB activated. Registration is completed at a station level.</li>
 <li>e-AWB testing: United requires VAN/CCS to communicate electronically.</li>
